Design and Technology

"Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation."  (National Curriculum)

St Jude’s Design and Technology Vision Statement

All aspects of our key principles in St Jude’s underpin our curriculum, which promotes our school motto and ethos of ‘Achieving together in God’s Love’.

Intent

At St Jude’s our curriculum is designed to provide, through reflective and collaborative experiences, the knowledge and skills to become independent, life-long learners. We believe that design and technology should inspire curiosity and resilience, enabling pupils to design and make products which solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming courageous, resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. Pupils apply their mathematics, science, art, reading and computing skills to design and technology activities.

We teach design and technology through project-based learning that, where appropriate, links to other areas of the curriculum, where pupils have opportunities to develop their skills and critical understanding of the subject.

Aims and Objectives:

We believe that every child can engage with and participate in design and technology with the right kind of teaching and support. At St Jude’s, we have high expectations to enable excellence for all and we base our teaching on the belief that all children have the potential to succeed.
